Mr Sam Smithies
Laboratory & Business Development Manager | Turning rigorous science into results
Sam has always been motivated by a simple but powerful driver: solving problems through science. His passion for applying rigorous research to real-world challenges first took shape during his Physics degree at the University of Manchester, where he worked part-time for Artemis Analytical while contributing to the nuclear physics department. That experience sparked not only a love of science and research but also an appreciation for how analytical methods could be applied in commercial settings to deliver insights that might otherwise be out of reach.
After graduating, Sam joined Artemis Analytical full-time and quickly developed expertise in analytical chemistry. The discipline and rigor he gained during his degree proved invaluable as he began taking on increasingly complex projects. More than just technical experience, this early foundation gave him the ability to bridge scientific methods with business needs — a theme that continues to define his role today.
As Laboratory and Business Development Manager at Artemis Analytical, Sam oversees day-to-day laboratory operations while also shaping the company’s growth. His work ensures that the science remains at the cutting-edge, and he is particularly focused on helping the business offer bespoke analytical solutions tailored to emerging challenges. A key milestone under his leadership was guiding Artemis through ISO 9001 Quality Management System certification, underscoring his commitment to both quality and innovation. His dual interest in science and business allows him to connect rigorous research with commercial value, ensuring Artemis delivers both robust science and practical outcomes for its clients.
For Sam, Artemis is more than just a workplace — it represents the chance to combine his twin passions of science and business in ways that have a tangible impact. He is especially energized by the company’s commitment to offering a personal, bespoke service, helping customers solve complex and often unique problems.
Beyond Artemis, Sam enjoys reading, travelling, and playing music as part of brass bands — pursuits that bring balance and creativity to his scientific and commercial focus.
