Prof Kieran Flanagan
Chief Executive Officer | Turning Scientific Discovery into Real-World Impact
Kieran's journey is a testament to the belief that fundamental science can help change the world. Over 25 years, his career has been a fusion of discovery and detection, starting with nuclear physics experiments at CERN, where he developed new spectroscopic tools to measure exotic atoms. His belief that advances motivated by fundamental science should also be used to solve real-world problems led him to establish Artemis Analytical Ltd.
His academic career has been marked by significant achievements, including a professorship at the University of Manchester and various leadership roles, such as Vice Dean for Research and Innovation. He has been awarded three ERC grants and the prestigious IOP Ernest Rutherford Medal. This deep expertise in cutting-edge research, combined with his experience managing large technical teams, is the driving force behind Artemis Analytical.
Kieran co-founded Artemis Analytical with a clear mission: to leverage his expertise in detecting exotic, short-lived nuclei for wider applications in analytical science. The company's core aim is to develop the most sensitive tools to address critical challenges in industries like nuclear decommissioning and environmental analysis. His work at CERN, which involved detecting single atoms, is the foundation for Artemis's innovative mass spectrometry techniques.
Building Artemis from the ground up allowed Kieran to instil his values into the company's mission: to push the boundaries of what’s possible. Artemis is dedicated to developing cutting-edge technologies that empower scientific discovery and solve complex societal problems. A prime example is the ‘Water Professor’, a simple yet powerful service that allows customers to quickly detect issues in their drinking water.
When he's not leading Artemis, Kieran enjoys spending time in the great outdoors with his family, whether biking, walking, or windsurfing.
