Dr Giles Edwards

Chief Scientific Officer | The Engineer's Approach to Analytical Chemistry

Dr. Giles Edwards is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) with a career distinguished by expertise in problem-solving applications in analytical chemistry and troubleshooting complex analytical instrumentation across all three sectors.

His technical foundation began with six years as an IT service and network engineer for the NHS, specializing in Windows NT, MS Exchange and VoIP systems. Subsequently, his career has been equally divided between industry and academia, with roles encompassing the management of analytical mass spectrometry (MS) services and a multidisciplinary scientific research centre, along with providing consultancy services globally.

Dr. Edwards holds a PhD in Physical Chemistry, where his research focused on developing novel MS imaging techniques utilizing laser post-ionization. His integrated skill set in analytical chemistry and engineering has been critical in developing novel analytical instrumentation.

In industry, he served as a global MS escalation engineer for Waters Corporation, providing advanced technical support and application assistance to field service engineers and key clients worldwide. As a consultant, his clientele has included high-profile organizations such as the Environment Agency, DSTL, Pfizer, GSK, and UKAEA.

Currently, he works with the University of Manchester's nuclear physics group to develop cutting-edge MS instrumentation and is a Director of Artemis Analytical Ltd., a spin-out company commercializing this new technology.

Committed to global scientific capacity building, he founded the Recycling Organisation for Research Opportunities (RORO) in 2005. RORO donates and installs sophisticated MS systems and provides academic training to universities in developing countries, significantly contributing to the expansion of the RSC's Pan African Chemistry Network. This in turn has enabled him to build a large global network of top scientists.
